There are fast motorcycles, there are powerful motorcycles, and then there is the KTM 1290 Super Duke R.

Our newly acquired 2022 KTM 1290 Super Duke R has travelled just 12,800 km and comes equipped with the KTM Tech Pack, tank protector and fly screen, along with registration through to 2 April 2027.

KTM calls it THE BEAST, and after riding one it is pretty easy to understand why.

At the heart of the Super Duke R is KTM's enormous 1301cc LC8 75 degree V twin, producing approximately 180 horsepower and a massive 140 Nm of torque.

This is not an engine that needs to be worked hard to be entertaining. The LC8 produces huge amounts of torque throughout the rev range, giving the Super Duke effortless acceleration and an addictive connection between your right hand and the rear wheel.

Open the throttle and the response is immediate.

The six speed transmission is paired with KTM's PASC slipper clutch and ride by wire throttle, while the sophisticated electronics help manage the considerable performance available from the engine.

And this is where the Super Duke R really starts to separate itself from an ordinary large capacity naked bike.

The chassis is built around a lightweight chrome molybdenum steel trellis frame with a single sided swingarm and high quality WP APEX suspension.

Up front are 48mm fully adjustable WP APEX forks, matched to a fully adjustable WP APEX rear shock. This is proper performance suspension that gives the rider the ability to tailor the bike to suit their preferences and riding conditions.

Then KTM added serious braking hardware.

Brembo Stylema four piston radial monobloc calipers work with twin 320mm front discs, providing exceptional stopping power and excellent feel when you start exploring the capabilities of the chassis.

The electronic package is equally impressive.

This particular bike has the KTM Tech Pack fitted, adding further performance focused functionality to an already sophisticated motorcycle.

The Super Duke R features selectable riding modes, traction control, cornering ABS, anti wheelie technology and ride by wire throttle control, allowing the rider to make better use of the enormous performance available from the LC8.

The 2022 model also features KTM's quicker 65 degree throttle, giving the motorcycle a more direct throttle response and helping the rider get the most from that huge V twin.

And then there is the way it looks.

The Super Duke R has never been a motorcycle interested in blending into the background.

The exposed trellis frame, muscular fuel tank, sharp bodywork and compact rear section give it an unmistakable KTM attitude. It looks aggressive because it is aggressive.

The fitted fly screen adds a little extra wind protection while complementing the Super Duke's minimalist styling, while the tank protector provides some welcome protection in an area that sees plenty of contact during enthusiastic riding.

With just 12,800 km on the clock, this is a very appealing example of one of KTM's most desirable performance naked motorcycles.

It gives you the full Super Duke R experience without stepping into the territory of a heavily modified or highly used example.
