2026 YAMAHA YZF R9

2.99% Finance!!! $19990 ride away!!!

There is a very good reason the Yamaha YZF R9 has created so much attention. It takes the character and muscle of Yamaha’s legendary CP3 triple cylinder engine and puts it into a genuine supersport chassis designed from the ground up around performance, precision and rider confidence.

And right now, the 2026 R9 is even more tempting, with Yamaha Australia offering $3,000 factory savings on the MY26 YZF R9, bringing the advertised ride away price down from $23,699 to just $20,699. Yamaha is also currently offering 2.99% comparison rate finance on eligible applications and terms. Offers are available through 31 December 2026, while stocks last and subject to Yamaha’s conditions.

Under the fairing sits Yamaha’s 890cc CP3 three cylinder engine. This is the same basic engine family that has made the MT 09 such a standout motorcycle, but the R9 receives its own ECU calibration and gearing specifically developed for supersport use.

The result is an engine that delivers a serious amount of performance without needing to be ridden like an old school 600 supersport. The triple has strong midrange torque, a broad spread of usable power and that unmistakable crossplane three cylinder character. Yamaha has also tuned the airbox and intake system to make the induction note part of the experience.

The R9 is not simply an MT 09 with race fairings. This is where the engineering gets interesting.

Yamaha built a dedicated aluminium Deltabox supersport frame for the R9. It is gravity cast and is claimed by Yamaha to be the lightest aluminium frame ever used on one of its supersport models. The chassis has been engineered to provide enough rigidity and feedback for serious track riding while retaining a level of compliance that makes the motorcycle usable on the road.

The weight distribution is close to an ideal 50 50 split, helping the R9 feel balanced when braking hard, changing direction and carrying corner speed.

SUSPENSION

Up front you get high specification fully adjustable KYB 43mm upside down forks with 120mm of travel.

At the rear is a fully adjustable KYB shock working through Yamaha’s linkage type rear suspension, with 117mm of wheel travel.

This gives the rider plenty of scope to set the motorcycle up for their weight, riding style and intended use, whether that means attacking a favourite mountain road or setting the bike up for track days.

BRAKING

Yamaha has not cut corners here either.

The R9 uses Brembo Stylema monobloc front calipers working through a Brembo radial master cylinder and twin 320mm front discs.

That combination provides the sort of braking hardware you would expect to find on a serious supersport machine, with excellent initial bite, feel and control.

The rear brake uses a 220mm disc and ABS, with the R9 also offering the ability to switch the rear ABS off for track riding.

ELECTRONICS

This is arguably one of the areas where the R9 separates itself from traditional middleweight sportsbikes.

The R9 uses a six axis IMU to constantly monitor the motorcycle’s behaviour and lean angle, allowing Yamaha’s electronic rider aids to respond to what the motorcycle is actually doing rather than simply relying on basic wheel speed sensors.

The Yamaha Ride Control system gives the rider extensive control over the motorcycle’s electronic behaviour, including power delivery, traction control, slide control, lift control, engine braking and brake control.

The electronics can be adjusted to suit the rider, road conditions and riding environment, meaning the R9 can be relatively forgiving when you want it to be, then transformed into a seriously focused track machine when the conditions call for it.

There is also launch control, an adjustable engine braking system and Yamaha’s quickshifter, giving the R9 a level of electronic sophistication that would have been reserved for Yamaha’s flagship sportsbikes not that long ago.

THE AERODYNAMICS

The R9 looks fast standing still, but the bodywork has a genuine aerodynamic purpose.

The sharp R Series front fairing incorporates Yamaha’s signature M shaped central air intake and MotoGP inspired aerodynamic winglets.

These winglets are designed to generate additional downforce and improve front end stability without creating unnecessary drag.

The result is a motorcycle that feels planted when the pace rises while retaining the compact, aggressive proportions that have become synonymous with Yamaha’s latest generation R Series.

RIDER INTERFACE

The R9 gets a full colour five inch TFT display with multiple display themes, including a dedicated track focused layout.

Yamaha has also integrated smartphone connectivity and modern handlebar controls, allowing the rider to access and monitor a wide range of information without taking away from the focused nature of the cockpit.

The riding position is unmistakably supersport, but Yamaha has deliberately avoided making the R9 as uncompromising as a pure race replica.

The 831mm seat height, 195kg wet weight and carefully considered ergonomics give the R9 a level of accessibility that makes sense for real world riding.

The R9 also has genuine racing credibility behind it. Yamaha’s first season of World Supersport competition with the R9 saw the model make an immediate impact, proving that this is not simply a road bike dressed up to look like a race machine. Yamaha developed the R9 specifically to bridge the gap between accessible road riding and genuine supersport performance.

And that is probably the best way to describe the R9.

It sits in a very interesting part of the market.

It has considerably more engine and midrange character than the traditional 600cc supersport formula, while remaining lighter, more compact and more approachable than a litre class superbike.

You get the excitement of a genuine R Series sportsbike without needing to ride around town feeling like you are sitting on a race bike that happens to have number plates.

For the rider who wants one motorcycle that can carve up a mountain road on Sunday morning, commute during the week and still have the chassis, brakes, electronics and suspension to make a track day seriously entertaining, the R9 makes a very convincing argument.
